About the SIIM Expert Hotline

The SIIM Expert Hotline for PACS and imaging informatics is provided to help prospective and current technology users tap into SIIM’s significant expertise and background. With more than 2,500 individuals, 100 institutional, and 40 corporate members, SIIM includes in its membership the early pioneers, adopters, and developers of the technology, the institutions that have led the way in developing its specifications and applications, and the vendors who have been responsive to the needs of users.

The Hotline had its origins in the mid-1990s as an e-mail service for SIIM members and was ably managed by Ronald Schilling, PhD. In 2003, SIIM secured a grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Library of Medicine Grant (1G07 LM007875-01, “Improving Access to Digital Imaging Expertise”) to create an open, online resource. The new SIIM Expert Hotline and Archive was developed by the Radiology Informatics Laboratory of the Medical College of Wisconsin, under the direction of Paul Nagy, PhD. (Press Release 3/16/04)

The resulting question-and-answer resource, previously available only to SIIM members in print format, is now archived and updated online for access by both members and nonmembers. Searching and viewing are free on the site, which provides a wealth of information for professionals who use or are interested in PACS technology and clinical implementation of information systems in imaging. SIIM members may post questions to the site free of charge, and nonmembers may post a question for a $150 fee, which includes a 1-year membership in the Society.
