Additional Open Source ResourcesMirth Breakout Session at SIIM 2007 — "IIP Survival Guide: Tools of the Trade - Mirth - Health Care's Integration Swiss Army Knife" by Ron Sweeney, SIIM News, Winter 2008. At the SIIM 2007 Annual Meeting, a group of individuals held a breakout session to test the high-availability clustering features available in Mirth appliances. The Journal of Digital Imaging Special Issue: Open Source Application for Imaging Informatics in Medicine — This special supplement is available online, and all articles are open access! Open Source in Imaging Informatics — Paul Nagy, PhD's introductory article in the November 2007 JDI Supplement on Open Source. The open source community within radiology is a vibrant collection of developers and users working on scores of collaborative projects with the goal of promoting the use of information technology within radiology for education, clinical, and research purposes. This community, which includes many commercial partners, has a rich history in supporting the success of the digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) standard and today is pioneering interoperability limits by embracing the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise. This article describes only a small portion of the more successful open source applications and is written to help end users see these projects as practical aids for the imaging informaticist and picture archiving and communication system (PACS) administrator. SIIM Co-Sponsor Education Session at HIMSS 2008 — "The Role of Open-Source Software in Medical Informatics and Information Technology". This presentation by Janice Honeyman-Buck, PhD examined the role of Open-Source in Medical Informatics and introduced some of the innovation solutions available for IT professionals to adopt or enhance. View presentation slides. Open Source Solutions for Multi-Center Information Management — Abstracts and presentations made at MCIM 2007 (Conference Proceedings). The Insight Journal — An open access online publication covering the domain of medical image processing and visualization A Radiology Open Source FAQ — What is open source? A lot has been written and discussed about this sometimes-controversial topic. Steve Langer, PhD uses a question-and-answer format to present certain challenge questions concerning the suitability of open source (OS) in radiology and responses to those questions. Open Source Visualization & Image Processing — View slides and listen to pod casts from this presentation at SCAR 2006 discussing how open source visualization can help radiologists and researchers visualize and analyze the expanding data sets generated by CT, MRI and PET scanners. Leading open source solutions include Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK), Visualization Toolkit (VTK) and ImageJ. The Insight Software Consortium (ISC) is a non-profit resource that educates, promotes and supports open source, medical imaging software, data and publications. Open Source PACS Tools — View slides and listen to podcasts from this Special Session on April 28, 2006 at SCAR 2006. Open source tools have helped promote DICOM standards from early on in relation to PACS use. The tools – which can be used as fully implemented production software – can also be useful for teaching as well as ways to measure performance. Open Source Roundtables — A brief summary from the Open Source Roundtable at SIIM 2007, which was held on Sunday, June 10, 2007 and SCAR 2006, which was held on Sunday, April 30, 2006 are presented. Both sessions were moderated by Paul Nagy, PhD.
